Canada has a wide range of prestigious universities that attract more than 300,000 students annually, from all over the world, and every year a number of Canadian universities must occupy several advanced positions in various international rankings.

In Canada, a medical school is a college or college affiliated with a university that trains future doctors and usually offers a three- to five-year Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery (M.D., CM) degrees. Although most students currently enter medicine after having previously earned another degree, the M.D.

There are currently 17 medical schools in Canada with an annual acceptance success rate of less than 7.5%. As of 2021, approximately 11,500 students are enrolled in Canadian medical schools, graduating 2,900 annually.

The medical schools of the University of Manitoba, McMaster University, and the University of Toronto, in addition to training prospective physicians, offer a two-year bachelor’s or master’s degree for physician assistant training.

In general, medical students begin their studies after they earn a bachelor’s degree in another field, often one of the biological sciences. Not all medical schools in Canada require a bachelor’s degree for admission. For example, medical schools in Quebec accept applicants after a two-year CEGEP diploma, which is the equivalent of a 12th degree in other provinces as well as a first year of university.

Most medical schools in Western Canada require at least two years, and most colleges in Ontario require at least 3 years of undergraduate study before applying to medical school. The University of Manitoba requires applicants to complete a previous degree prior to admission. The Association of Medical Colleges of Canada (AFMC) publishes a detailed guide to admission requirements for Canadian medical schools on an annual basis.

McMaster University:

McMaster University School of Medicine was established in 1966 and today there are a variety of programs in medical education. The undergraduate medical program for the MD degree is competitive and only accepts 203 students each year.

The program is shorter than many other medical degrees at just three years. Students study for 11 months each year, which compresses more learning into the traditional time frame. It’s just one of

two medical programs in Canada – and one at the University of Calgary – running an accelerated program.

The idea behind the innovative approach is that medical students should learn medicine the way physicians practice medicine.

The university does not have any prerequisites for admission to the course, which means students from all academic and personal backgrounds study the course because it focuses on small group learning, and basic knowledge is gained through patient presentations rather than from lectures on diseases. During their studies, students are encouraged to work with patients to ensure that they graduate with a strong sense of patient orientation.
