CERN is a European research organization that operates the world’s largest particle physics laboratory. Founded in 1954, the organization is located in a northwestern suburb of Geneva on the Franco-Swiss border and has 23 member states and CERN is an official observer of the United Nations.

The acronym CERN is also used to refer to the laboratory, which in 2016 had about 2,500 scientific, technical and administrative staff, and hosted about 12,000 users. In the same year, the organization produced 49 petabytes of data.

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers study the basic structure of the universe. Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic components of matter, the fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insight into the fundamental laws of nature.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN’s mission since its founding and is an enduring value of the organization, and education is one of CERN’s primary missions.

Professionals enjoy sharing their knowledge and experience with students who are committed and enthusiastic about their chosen field. And there’s no better way to learn than on the job: When you happen to be a job with a world-renowned research organization and center of scientific excellence, even better.
