With the development of scholarships and the increase in demand for them, the demand for English language tests has increased as one of the basic conditions for admission to scholarships of all kinds and forms in the whole world.
The IELTS test, both traditional and academic, has long been considered the first choice for students looking to obtain university admission at an English-speaking university, followed by the TOEFL test in second place.
Recently, with the spread of the Corona pandemic and the cancellation of most of the “physical” English language exams around the world, a new type of English language test has emerged as a reliable means to prove English language proficiency for universities, which is the Duolingo test, which was able in a short time to reserve for itself an important place between exams, and to become one of the approved English language tests in more than 1,000 universities and educational institutions until writing this article.
What is the Duolingo app?
One of the best language learning apps ever, it relies on fun interactive methods that turn language learning into a kind of addiction thanks to short fun lessons based mainly on pictures, sentence formation and short audio clips.
The Duolingo application forces the user to take periodic short exams to ensure the extent of his language capabilities. The most prominent languages provided by the application are English, Spanish, Japanese, German, Italian, Turkish and Chinese. It is available on Android and Apple platforms.
Recently, due to the difficulty of movement and gathering imposed by the spread of the Covid 19 virus, Duolingo launched its English language test under the name The Duolingo English Test. Indeed, some universities have begun to adopt it as a standard to prove the student’s proficiency in the English language, so if you intend to take this test for the purpose of obtaining university admission, I advise you at first to contact your university and make sure that they recognize this application and what the required mark is.
What is the Duolingo English Test?
Duolingo test is an online test that the student takes on his personal computer, and like TOEFL and IELTS it tests all four language skills, reading, listening, speaking and writing, and the method of the tests in it is an innovative and easy way that was praised by all the students who took this test.
The test has a unique feature that helps it being an electronic test, in this test if the student answers a question correctly.
The next question becomes more difficult, but if it is answered incorrectly, the next question becomes easier, which means that with relatively few questions the test can determine the student’s ability level quickly and accurately, which is why it only takes about an hour.
Unlike traditional English exams, each student can take the Duolingo English test from their computer, while maintaining some instructions, but because this means that the company does not get paid for the test, the cost of the test on its official website is only about $ 49 .
What is the test method?
Being at home doesn’t mean there are no rules, in fact, Duolingo has some strict rules in place to make sure the person taking the test doesn’t get any extra help.
In the beginning the student must be alone, no one else can be in the room with him or talk to him during the test, the student also cannot move away from the browser window for the duration of the test, the student must show his ears to the observers of the entire test, to ensure that there is no There are no side headphones, and there are other guidelines to follow, so be sure to read them before sitting for the exam.
Perhaps the hardest for those who are used to other tests is that you cannot take any notes, since the test questions are relatively short, you do not need to take notes during the test.
The Duolingo Test of English is a computer-based test first and foremost, so in order to ensure that test takers are following the rules, Duolingo uses monitors, so that the proctors watch the student’s video while taking the test.
Every experience, even a student’s keystrokes on a keyboard, is recorded, and then two independent reviewers will watch the screen looking for any other people, or any background noise.
Once the test is over, the student will have a score between 10 and 160, which is a comprehensive score for all parts of the test, not broken down by section, the best programs may require a score higher than 120, so any student can also see how their Duolingo scores compare to their TOEFL and IELTS scores after receiving it.
The most important thing to know about the Duolingo test
This test has many details that every student must know before deciding to take it, the first of them is that the test is now approved by about 1000 universities around the world, and these universities receive results from the test-based website immediately after they appear 48 hours after the student finishes the test .
The duration of the test is an hour, the first five minutes in which the student learns about the conditions and rules of the test, then the test itself, which lasts for 45 minutes, and then at the end is a ten-minute video interview.
This test only needs a computer with a supported browser, a camera, headphones and a microphone, of course, a fast internet connection, and a proof of the student’s identity so that the test takers can identify his identity.
What is the difference between it and the TOEFL?
The first thing you’ll notice is that Duolingo’s item types look very different from those of other quizzes. There are no long texts to read, listen to or write about, and most items in the quiz are relatively short.
In comparison, TOEFL focuses on scenarios a student is likely to encounter in the real world, especially in academia, TOEFL divides question type by section, Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, while Duolingo combines all questions into one test, so a student may encounter a reading question After writing question.
Like Duolingo, the TOEFL test is primarily a computer-based test. However, the TOEFL test is not adaptable to the student’s performance in the questions, the difficulty of the questions has nothing to do with the previous answers, on the other hand, Duolingo is adaptable throughout the entire test, so the questions change in relation to everything I answer in the test.
What is the difference between it and IELTS?
Duolingo and IELTS both test all four areas of language acquisition, however, a student won’t see long texts on Duolingo. Instead, the test works by measuring language ability through things like your knowledge of idioms, and your use of intonation.
IELTS has the traditional question formats such as multiple choice, short answer and essay questions, while Duolingo questions take on new formats.
The main difference in terms of format is that Duolingo has adaptive answers, while IELTS Standard format is not adaptive, meaning that Duolingo has the ability to assess your English language skills in a very short period of time unlike IELTS.
Another big difference is that IELTS is offered in two ways, paper and electronic, while Duolingo is offered only in electronic form.
Finally, while IELTS has two versions, Academic and General, Duolingo only has one, however, it should be noted that Duolingo is accepted by some universities, so it can still be used for academic purposes
