Columbia University (also known as Columbia, and officially as Columbia University in the City of New York) is a private research university at the Ivy League in New York City. Founded in 1754 as King’s College on the grounds of Trinity Church in Manhattan, Columbia is the oldest institution of higher learning in New York and the fifth oldest institution of higher learning in the United States

The university offers scholarships including a scholarship for displaced students. This scholarship supports displaced students from anywhere in the world who are unable to complete their higher education.

These students will receive up to full tuition, housing, and living assistance while pursuing their undergraduate or graduate studies at all 19 Columbia schools and their affiliates, reflecting Columbia’s full institutional commitment to addressing this global crisis.

As the first Columbia-wide scholarship, and the first scholarship of its kind in the world, this program will commit up to $6 million in support, per group, to up to 30 students each year. Guidance and support will be provided through the scholarship, as well as by schools and student groups in Colombia.

The scholarship aims to transform the global dialogue surrounding IDPs, from one that views them as a burden to one that recognizes them as vital contributors to global innovation and prosperity.

Currently, there is no such initiative in any university in the world, despite the clear desire for education on the part of these displaced students. The Columbia University Scholarships for Displaced Students aims to be a leader in addressing this urgent humanitarian need and hopefully encourage other universities to follow suit.

The United Nations estimates that more than 82 million people are currently living as refugees or asylum seekers, or have been internally displaced by war and natural disasters – the largest population in human history. A significant number of these individuals have had their education interrupted, severely affecting their potential for future success.

The Columbia University Scholarship for Displaced Students (CUSDS) is an effort to combat this unprecedented human and economic loss by providing displaced students with the opportunity to pursue higher education at Columbia University, one of the world’s leading educational institutions.
