GIST Korea is one of four public universities (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology and Daegu Gyeongbok Institute of Science and Technology) dedicated to research in science and technology in Gwangju, South Korea.
The Institute was established by the South Korean government in 1993 as a graduate school dedicated to research and training of highly skilled scientists and researchers, to create a strong research base for the development of advanced science and technology and to promote collaborative overseas and domestic research programs within industry and academia.
According to a 2012 news article in Korea JoongAng Daily, “All classes are taught in English, and all MA and PhD theses are written in English. PhD students only receive their degrees if they publish more than one work as their first authorship. In 2001, the institute became the first Korean university to issue a quality certificate in the thesis program, and it also gained attention from the field of science and media. In the 2016/2017 QS World University Rankings Results Tables, GIST is ranked 2 in the world in the per faculty citations category.
