Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie explores materials and complex material systems that help meet current and future challenges, such as the “Energiewende”. Energy conversion and efficient use of energy and resources in information technology as well as other innovative areas largely depend on research and testing of new material systems, and scientists are investigating the source of the macroscopic properties of materials from which microscopic or molecular structures are derived.
HZB’s research focuses on materials needed to provide a safe and sustainable supply of energy, such as materials for thin-film photovoltaic cells and for converting solar energy into chemical energy carriers (such as molecular hydrogen).
To solve these scientific problems, HZB operates a large research infrastructure of international importance, a third generation synchrotron radiation source BESSY II. HZB’s user platform coordinates access to the infrastructure. Both scientific instruments and the large machine are constantly being developed to stay ahead of the curve. To make sure that optimal research conditions are also provided in the future, HZB is working on so-called “future projects” and reports on the planning and implementation of these projects on this site.
As part of the Helmholtz Society’s Strategic Research Funding (POF), HZB is involved in the areas of Helmholtz MATTER and Energy research. Very relevant topics are also the training and support of young scientists and the intensification of research cooperation, particularly with universities.

Helmholtz-Zentrum Fully Funded Scholarship in Germany:
Each summer HZB offers undergraduate students an eight-week Summer Student Program. Students from all over the world get the opportunity to work on their own research project in close collaboration with scientists.
The program provides students with the opportunity to participate in the day-to-day work of our research teams in their laboratories or experimental areas located on the HZB campuses in Berlin Wannsee or Berlin-Adlershof.
The program is accomplished through field visits to the BESSY II synchrotron radiation source, solar energy research laboratories and an accelerator to produce proton beams for the treatment of eye tumors.
Eligibility Criteria and Qualifications:
To be eligible for Helmholtz-Zentrum Fully Funded Scholarship in Germany:
- International students from all over the world.
- Student in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or related disciplines.
- You must have completed at least two years of full-time study in your major at undergraduate level.
- You will remain registered as a student during your stay at HZB.
- You have a good knowledge of English, knowledge of German will be an advantage.
The Summer Student Program in 2022 will take place from July 4 to August 29.
Benefits of Helmholtz-Zentrum Fully Funded Scholarship in Germany:
- An 8-week internship contract to work on a project.
- A subsistence allowance for the entire duration of the contract totaling €1,800 for external participants and a total of €1,000 for students of universities located in Berlin and Potsdam.
- Travel expenses of up to €500 will be subsidized to help you with travel costs between Berlin and your place of residence.
