Karolinska Institute (KI; Swedish: Karolinska Institute, sometimes known as Karolinska Institute (Royal) in English) is a research-led medical university in Solna within the Stockholm metropolitan region of Sweden.
The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institute awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The association is made up of fifty professors from various medical specialties of the university. The current rector of the Karolinska Institute is Ole Peter Ottersen, who took office in August 2017.
The Karolinska Institute is consistently ranked among the best medical schools in the world, having been ranked sixth globally in medicine in 2021.
Karolinska Institute was founded in 1810 on the island of Kungsholmen on the western side of Stockholm. The main campus was moved decades later to Solna, outside of Stockholm. A second campus has recently been established in Flemingsberg, Houding, south of Stockholm.
Karolinska Institute is the third oldest medical school in Sweden, after Uppsala University (founded in 1477) and Lund University (founded in 1666). It is one of the largest training and research centers in Sweden, accounting for 30% of medical training and more than 40% of all medical and life sciences academic research conducted in Sweden.
Karolinska University Hospital, located in Solna and Hooding, is associated with the university as a research and teaching hospital. Together they form an academic center for health sciences.
Most medical programs are taught in Swedish, the bulk of PhD projects are conducted in English.

There are many Swedish, European and international institutions that award scholarships. The rules for different scholarships and grants can vary, some are intended to help cover the cost of living, others are to fund tuition fees (for non-EU/EEA citizens) and some can be used to cover different educational costs.
Karolinska Institute is offering a few tuition fee scholarships to high-achieving students who have been accepted into one of our global master’s programs starting each fall semester. The amount of scholarships varies from year to year, but there are a maximum of 10 scholarships per year, spread across all global master’s programs. Competition is strong with approximately 1,500 international students applying for the scholarship annually.
