Leiden University (commonly referred to as LEI and LU; Dutch: Universiteit Leiden) is a public research university in Leiden, the Netherlands. Founded by William Prince of Orange in 1575 as a reward for the city of Leiden for its defense against Spanish attacks during the Eighty Years’ War, it is the oldest institution of higher education in the Netherlands, as well as one of the most famous.

Known for its historical foundations and focus on the social sciences, the university came to prominence during the Dutch Golden Age, when scholars from all over Europe were attracted to the Dutch Republic due to its climate of intellectual tolerance and Leiden’s international reputation. During this time, Leiden became home to such individuals as René Descartes, Rembrandt, Christian Huygens, Hugo Grotius, Baruch Spinoza, and Baron de Holbach.

The university has seven academic faculties and more than fifty subject departments while home to more than 40 national and international research institutes. The primary historic campus consists of buildings scattered throughout the university city of Leiden, while the second campus, located in The Hague, houses the liberal arts college and its many faculties. It is a member of the Coimbra Group and Europaeum and a founding member of the Association of European Research Universities.

Leiden University is consistently ranked among the top 100 universities in the world by notable international ranking tables. Ranked among the world’s top 50 universities in thirteen fields of study in the 2020 QS World University Rankings: Classics, Ancient History, Politics, Archeology, Anthropology, History, Pharmacology, Law, Public Policy, Public Administration, Religious Studies, Arts and Humanities, Linguistics, Modern Languages, and Sociology.

The university has produced twenty-one Spinoza Laureates and sixteen Nobel Prize laureates, including Enrico Fermi and Albert Einstein. Closely related to the Dutch royal family, Queen Juliana, Queen Beatrix and King Willem-Alexander graduated. Ten Dutch prime ministers are also alumni, including current Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
