Mount Allison University Mount A is a primarily Canadian liberal arts university located in Sackville, New Brunswick. Mount Allison University was the first university in the British Empire to award a baccalaureate degree to a woman (Grace Annie Lockhart, BA, 1875). Mount Allison alumni have been awarded 55 Rhodes Scholarships. American chemist James B. Sumner, winner of the 1946 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, worked at Mount Allison as a Teaching Fellow in 1910-11. Mount Allison also has one of the largest endowments per student in Canada.

Mount Allison University is a secular (but affiliated with the United Church) primarily an undergraduate liberal arts university, founded in Sackville, New Brunswick on January 19, 1843. The university is named after Charles Frederick Allison, in honor of his grant of land and money. Its origins were steeped in Methodist doctrine and was designed to prepare men for ministry and to provide education for lay members. The university chartered on April 14, 1849.

In June 1839, Wesleyan Minister of Methodist Reverend John Bass Strong encouraged Charles Allison to build an elementary and higher education school. Alison offered to purchase a site in Sackville to build a suitable building for an academy and to contribute operating funds of £100 per year for 10 years. This offer was accepted and the Wesleyan Academy for Boys subsequently opened in 1843.

It has been ranked the best university in the country 21 times in the past 29 years by Maclean Magazine, a record unmatched by any other university. With a 17:1 student-faculty ratio, the average class size in first year is 60 students and senior year classes are 14 students.
