The National Institute of Genetics (NIG) is one of the most famous research institutes in Japan established by the Ministry of Education in 1949. NIG is located in Yota Mishima-shi, Shizuoka, Japan.

NIG is currently conducting various, integrated and applied research and studies in genetics, education and promotion.

NIG currently has more than 500 national and international members working on various research, maintenance, education, and stewardship projects. Besides, there are around 36 internationally acclaimed groups in diverse fields, bacteria, molecules and others.

In 2019 four research departments were established: Department of Informatics, Department of Genomics and Developmental Biology, Department of Gene Function and Phenomenology, Department of Chromosome Sciences.

The DDBJ Center, as one of the Intellectual Infrastructure Centers, was renamed the Center for Vital Information and DDBJ. The support center has been reorganized. And add a radioisotope unit.

National Institute of Genetics Funded Scholarships in Japan:

Each year, the National Institute of Genetics (NIG) invites national and international researchers for their various summer internship programs. It is a great opportunity for international students for a paid internship 2022 in Japan.

This year NIG also welcomes international undergraduate/bachelor students and postgraduate degree students to become part of one of the popular research training programs in Japan.

It is a great opportunity for all international students who wish to gain international research experience in a world-renowned research center in life sciences and genetics. NIG offers excellent opportunities to work on innovative research projects for interns around the world.

The program includes research training, scientific communication, and lab visits for discussion with individual principal investigators. At the end of the program, the trainees will give a presentation on their experience at the NIGINTERN Reporting Seminar.

NIG will issue a certificate to those who have successfully completed the program. Interns can also participate in various activities such as postgraduate program lectures, journal clubs and seminars by prominent researchers from both inside and outside the NIG. Japanese language lessons are also provided.

Eligibility Criteria and Qualifications:

To be eligible for National Institute of Genetics Funded Scholarships in Japan:

  • An applicant who is currently in the foundation year, i.e. the third and fourth year of the BA/BSc program.
  • An applicant who is currently in a foundation year, i.e. Year 1 and Year 2 of a Masters/Masters program.
  • An applicant registered with NIG in Ph.D. Bug submission is encouraged.
  • No IELTS/TOEFL certificate needed.

Interns must agree to meet the following requirements:

  • Maintain confidentiality of unpublished information obtained at NIG.
  • Dedicate full efforts to the NIGINTERN program. Complete the tasks, assignments and projects associated with the internship program.
  • Participation in the project throughout the training period (on a full-time basis, five days a week until the end of the specified term). Work on days and times agreed with the supervisor.
  • Give an oral presentation on the day specified for reporting the search results.
  • Submit an essay and questionnaire at the end of the training period.
  • Send all NIG-arranged boarding pass phrases to and from Japan.
