Founded in 1959, the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) is an international higher education organization located 40 kilometers north of Bangkok, Thailand. It specializes in engineering, advanced technologies, sustainable development, management and planning. Its goal is to “promote technological change and sustainable development” in the Asia Pacific region, through higher education, research and outreach.
IT operates as a self-contained international community on its campus in Pathumthani Province, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Bangkok, Thailand. Besides laboratories and academic buildings, the main campus includes housing, sports, medical facilities, a conference center, and a library with more than 230,000 volumes and 830 online publications and periodicals.
AIT was hosted by the College of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, before moving to its current campus in November 1973. It is currently located in the Rangsit district next to Tmasat University (Rangsit Campus), approximately 65 kilometers from Suvarnabhumi Airport.
AIT has a remote campus called AIT Center in Vietnam. It was established in 1993 under a Memorandum of Understanding between the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training and AIT. At the time, AITCV was the first international institution in Vietnam and the first AIT campus outside Thailand.
