East China Normal University (ECNU) is a comprehensive public research university in Shanghai, China. It was formed in 1951 by the merger of Greater China University (founded 1924) and Quang Hua University (founded 1925) and grew out of St. John’s College founded in 1879. Established as a regular school, it had the original mission of training teachers for secondary and higher education, but It quickly absorbed first-class researchers and developed into an elite research-intensive university.
In 2020, ECNU is organized into 22 schools, colleges and institutes, located in two campuses throughout Minhang and Putuo. The university has two affiliated schools across the Shanghai metropolitan area: New York University Shanghai in Pudong, and the Asia-European Business School in Zhizhou International Education Park. It also maintains a National Forest Ecosystem Research and Monitoring Station in Tiantong National Forest Park, Ningbo.
ECNU has been classified by the Ministry of Education of China as a first-class double-tiered university. It is often considered one of the most prestigious universities in China and internationally recognized. Sponsored by the national program “Project 211” and “Project 985”, the university is a leader in research and innovation in the country, and has been dubbed the “Columbia of the East”.
The university also has strong relationships with the China Meteorological Administration, the State Oceanic Administration, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is a highly selective university that only accepts students with a national college entrance examination score above 2%.
According to ARWU 2021, East China Normal University is ranked 301-400 among the world’s universities, compared to George Washington University (US), Durham University (UK), Ecole Normale Supérieure in Lyon (France), and Keio University (Japan) .

Shanghai Government Fully Funded Scholarship in China:
Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship was established in 2006 with the aim of promoting the development of international student education in Shanghai and encouraging more and more outstanding international students and scholars to ECNU.
This scholarship is for excellent international students who are applying to an undergraduate, postgraduate or doctoral program at East China Normal University. Undergraduate program applicants without an eligible HSK level can apply for a one-year pre-college program (application deadline May 10) to study Chinese with full scholarship sponsorship.
Eligibility Criteria and Qualifications:
To be eligible for Shanghai Government Fully Funded Scholarship in China:
- Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and in good health.
- Pre-college program applicants must have a high school diploma and be under 23 years old.
- Applicants for a bachelor’s degree program must have a high school diploma and be under 25 years old.
- Applicants for a master’s degree program must have a bachelor’s degree and be under 35 years old.
- Applicants for a doctoral degree program must have a master’s degree and less than 40.
- Students who hold a Chinese Government Scholarship or any scholarship offered by other organizations are not eligible to apply for SGS.
