College and university rankings are rankings of institutions in higher education based on combinations of different factors. None of the rankings provide a comprehensive overview of organizations’ strengths because they all choose a set of quantifiable characteristics to base their findings on.

The rankings take into account various combinations of funding and endowment metrics, research excellence and/or impact, specialty experience, admissions, student choices, award numbers, internationalization, graduate employability, industry linkage, historical reputation and other criteria.

Various rankings often evaluate universities by research. Some rankings evaluate universities within one country, while others evaluate universities around the world.

UNESCO has questioned whether rankings “do more harm than good”, acknowledging that “right or wrong, they are seen as a measure of quality and thus create intense competition among universities around the world”.

University rankings play an important role in study abroad preparations for international students. In this article, we have made a list of the best universities in the world ranked by all the prestigious ranking entities across the globe.

You can also compare university rankings from previous years, indicating if the university has advanced or if the quality and overall rankings have declined. Universities in the USA are still holding up, with no less than 2 to 3 universities in the top 5 of all lists. In fact, more than 80 universities in the US are ranked among the top 500 universities in the world.
