The University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder, CU, or Colorado) is a public research university in Boulder, Colorado. It is the flagship university of the University of Colorado system, and was founded in 1876, five months before Colorado became a state.

CU Boulder is a member of the Association of American Universities, a selective group of major research universities in North America, and is classified as an R1 university, meaning that it engages in a very high level of research activity.

According to the National Science Foundation, the university has spent $514 million on research and development in 2018, ranking 50th nationwide.

In 2015, the university consisted of nine colleges and schools and offered more than 150 academic programs and enrolled nearly 17,000 students. Five Nobel Laureates, nine MacArthur Fellows, a Turing Laureate, and 20 astronauts were affiliated with CU Boulder as students, researchers, or faculty in its history.

In 2010, the university received approximately $454 million in research-funded funding for programs such as the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics and JILA.

CU Boulder has been named Public Ivy, a group of publicly funded universities that are considered to provide a quality of education similar to that of the Ivy League.

The Colorado Buffaloes compete in 17 college sports and are members of the NCAA Division I Pac-12 Conference. The Buffalo team has won 28 national championships: 20 in skating, seven in men’s and women’s aggregate, and one in soccer.

The university has produced a total of ten Olympic medals. Nearly 900 students participate in 34 intercollegiate club sports annually as well.
