The University of Glasgow is a public research university in Glasgow, Scotland. Founded by the Papal Bull in 1451, it is the fourth oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of four ancient Scottish universities.
Besides the universities of Edinburgh, Aberdeen and St Andrews, the university was part of the Scottish Enlightenment during the 18th century.
The university was originally located on the city’s High Street; Since 1870, the main campus has been at Gilmorehill in the city’s West End. In addition, a number of university buildings are located in other locations, such as the Veterinary School in Bearsden, and the Crichton Campus in Dumfries.
High educational standards, stringent admission requirements (the fourth highest ranked in the UK) and a strong international research reputation have made the university a competitive destination for students worldwide. Glasgow is among the top 100 universities in the world with the institution being placed in the top 1% of the world’s universities.
More specifically, the University of Glasgow is ranked 53rd and 67th globally in the CWTS Leiden 2020 and 2020 QS World University Rankings respectively, in addition to being ranked nationally among the UK’s top 10 universities.
According to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, 81% of research achievements are rated ‘internationally excellent’ and ranked 10th in research volume in the UK. The university was awarded “2020 THE University of the Year” in recognition of its contribution to reparative justice.
