The University of Surrey is a public research university in Guilford, Surrey, England. The university received its royal charter in 1966, along with a number of other institutions based on recommendations in the Robbins Report. The institution was formerly known as Battersea College of Technology and is located in Battersea Park, London.
Its roots go back to Battersea Polytechnic, which was founded in 1891 to provide further and higher education in London, including its poorer residents. The university’s research output and global partnerships have led it to be recognized as one of the UK’s leading research universities.
The university is a member of the Association of MBAs and is one of four universities in the university’s global partnership network. It is also part of the SETsquared partnership with the University of Bath, University of Bristol, University of Southampton and University of Exeter.
The university’s main campus is located on Stag Hill, near Guildford city center and adjacent to Guildford Cathedral. Surrey Sports Park is located in nearby Manor Park, the university’s secondary campus. Among British universities, the University of Surrey was ranked 14th in terms of the average UCAS tariff for newcomers in 2015.
The university is a major center for satellite and mobile communications research, and is in partnership with King’s College London and University of Dresden to develop 5G technology worldwide. It also has a number of official links with institutions around the world, including the Surrey International Institute, which was launched in partnership with Dongbei University of Finance and Economics.
