The University of Waikato (Maori: T ware Wananga or Waikato), informally the University of Waikato, is a comprehensive university in Hamilton, New Zealand. Founded in 1964, the university has an additional campus located in Tauranga.
The University of Waikato began in 1956 after local Hamilton residents petitioned to establish a university to meet the needs of the South Auckland region. The group was led by Douglas Seymour, an attorney, and then Anthony “Rufus” Rogers, a JB Hamilton and brother to Hamilton’s longtime mayor, Dennis Rogers.
The university has about 13,000 students, including more than 1,800 international students from more than 70 different countries around the world. The university includes seven faculties: Arts and Social Sciences, Science and Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences, College of Education, College of Marawi and Pacific Development, College of Law, Waikato College of Management, and Bathway College.. Courses are offered at various undergraduate levels, bachelor’s, studies, graduate and doctoral degrees.
The University of Waikato is ranked among the top 1.1% of the world’s universities in the QS World University Rankings. It is rated five stars in the QS Stars scale. Times Higher Education ranks twelve of the university’s majors among the top 250 available worldwide, including computer science, economics, law, education, and social sciences.
