Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is a public research university in Richmond, Virginia. Virginia Commonwealth University was founded in 1838 as the medical department of Hampden-Sydney College, and became the Medical College of Virginia in 1854. In 1968, the General Assembly of Virginia merged the MCV with the Richmond Professional Institute, founded in 1917, to create Virginia Commonwealth University.
In 2018, more than 31,000 students pursued 217 degree and certificate programs through 11 schools and three colleges at VCU. The Virginia Commonwealth University Health System supports the university’s health care education, research, and patient care mission. Dr. Warren W. Brandt, responding to his inaugural address on November 10, 1970, emphasized the university’s commitment, which was unique in the country.
“We strive to be a strong institution with a major focus on being an urban university that serves the city, the state, and other institutions. We are not trying to be an elitist institution, but to be an institution that meets the needs of an urban community by accepting a wide range of students in a variety of programs.”
Virginia Commonwealth University generated a record $310 million in funded research funding in fiscal year 2019 and is ranked among a high-research-activity doctoral university. The university’s research mission supports a wide range of centers and institutes of excellence accredited by the university, which include faculty from multiple disciplines in the humanities, public policy, biotechnology, and healthcare discoveries. 28 graduate and first professional programs have been rated by US News & World Report as among the best in the country. VCU sports teams compete in the NCAA Division I and are known collectively as the VCU Rams. They are members of the 10th Atlantic Conference. The Virginia Commonwealth University campus includes historic buildings such as the Ginter House, now used by the school’s dean.
