What is the TOEFL test?

TOEFL is an acronym for Test of English as Foreign Language. The TOEFL test is one of two major international tests (IELTS & TOEFL) to measure a person’s proficiency in the English language, and is used for academic and professional purposes and for work or immigration to English-speaking countries. The test is regulated by the Educational Testing Service of America (ETS), a non-profit organization responsible for and administering the test around the world.

The TOEFL test is recognized in more than 150 countries in the world, led by the United States of America, and more than 7,500 university colleges and other educational institutions accept the TOEFL test all over the world, and the results of the TOEFL test are used for admission to English language study programs, to enroll in a scholarship, or for immigration.

Applicants for employment in international and local companies, whether in the Middle East or outside the Middle East, must pass international English language tests such as TOEFL or IELTS.

This test is given in English only.

Registration Terms:

There are no prerequisites for registration, all those wishing to obtain a TOEFL certificate can apply for this test.

Test sections:

There are two types of TOEFL test, the PBT (Paper-Based Test), and the pen and paper test. It is less common than the other type, and some institutions and international bodies no longer accept this form of TOEFL. The Internet-Based Test (IBT) is the most common test in the world and the most accepted in academia.

TOEFL PBT paper-based test:

TOEFL Paper-based Test It is conducted with pen and paper in some countries where the Internet is not available. It consists of three sections: Listening, Structure, and Reading and the overall score ranges between 310 – 677. This type was canceled in 2017 and was replaced by TOEFL PDT – Paper-delivered The test consists of 3 sections, namely Reading – Writing – Listening, and the division of marks is 30 marks for each section, with no total sum.

TOEFL IBT Online Test:

TOEFL Internet-based Test It is conducted by the Internet. It consists of 4 sections: Reading – Writing – Listening – Speaking, each section has 30 marks and the total is from 0 – 120. It consists of 4 parts:

Reading part:

It is a phrase of 3 to 5 paragraphs (700 words), and each paragraph has 12 to 14 questions, all of these questions are answered within the paragraphs. The duration of this part is 60 to 100 minutes.

The listening part:

It consists of 4 to 6 academic lectures, in addition to 2 – 3 long talks with the voices of the speakers, and the duration of this part is 60 to 90 minutes. The conversation part: It consists of 6 tasks assigned to the student, including discussing a specific topic, expressing an opinion and answering various questions, The answers are recorded via a microphone to be evaluated at a later time. The duration of this part is 20 minutes. As for the writing part: it consists of two topics, a topic in which the student writes what he hears and reads, and an essay topic on general issues, the duration of this part is 50 minutes.

What is the TOEFL Test

Conversation part:

It consists of 6 tasks assigned to the student, which include discussing a specific topic, expressing an opinion and answering various questions, and the answers are recorded through a microphone to be evaluated at a later time. The duration of this part is 20 minutes.

The writing part:

It consists of two topics, one in which the student writes what he hears and reads, and an essay topic on general issues, the duration of this part is 50 minutes.

Test mark:

The total test score is 130 points distributed over 30 points for each of the four test sections, and the student gets the result after several days of the test (not exceeding 10 days at most). Of course, there is no failure or pass the test, but it is a measure of a person’s English language level. Some universities and authorities require a TOEFL certificate with a high score, and some accept an average score.

Test duration:

The paper-based test is 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes and the online test is 2 hours 47 minutes to 3 hours 23 minutes (excluding a 10-minute break in between).
