Passing the correct English language test depends on your goals. If you need an English language test score for some official purpose, for example applying for a visa for Australia or a PhD program at the University of Wisconsin, the test you will normally take is not up to you.
The school or government you are applying to will tell you which test you will accept and take. But if you want to take an English test for another reason, for example to get a certificate for your CV or finish an English course with some kind of proof of your level of English, you have more flexibility.
In this case, you can choose a test based on many different factors, such as how expensive it is, whether or not it is offered at a test center in your city, or how popular it is in your country. In any case, it is best to take a close look at all the options before making a decision because even though Standardized English Language Tests may look similar, each test is actually unique.
The Test of English for International Communication: TOEIC is an international standardized test of English language proficiency for non-native speakers. It was intentionally designed to measure the everyday English skills of people working in an international environment.
The TOEIC Speaking and Writing tests were introduced in 2006. Test takers receive separate scores for both tests, or they can take the Speaking test without taking the Writing test and vice versa. The Speaking test assesses pronunciation, intonation, tense, vocabulary, grammar, coherence, content relevance and completeness of content, while the Writing test assesses grammar, relevance of sentences to pictures, sentence quality and variety, vocabulary, organization, and whether an opinion is supported by reason and/or examples.
The tests are designed to reflect actual use of English in the workplace, although they do not require any knowledge of specialized business terminology. The TOEIC Speaking test takes about 20 minutes to complete; The TOEIC writing test lasts about 60 minutes. The range for each test ranges from 0 to 200, with test takers being grouped into eight speaking and nine writing proficiency levels.
The US-based Educational Testing Service (ETS) has developed the TOEIC test to measure achievement in the use of English in a business environment. Yasuo Kitaoka was the central figure in the Japanese team that developed the basic idea for the TOEIC test. The main competitors to ETS are the University of Cambridge, which administers the IELTS, FCE, CAE and CPE exams, and Trinity College London, which administers the GESE and ISE exams.
There are different forms of the test: the TOEIC Listening and Reading test consists of two equally graded tests of comprehension assessment activities with a total possible score of 990; There are also TOEIC Speaking and Writing tests. The TOEIC Speaking test consists of tasks that assess pronunciation, intonation and tense, vocabulary, grammar, coherence, suitability and completeness of content.
The TOEIC writing test consists of tasks that assess grammar, the suitability of sentences to pictures, the quality and variety of sentences, vocabulary, organization, and whether the opinion is supported by reason and/or examples. Both assessments use a grading scale from 0 to 200.
TOEIC listening and reading:
The TOEIC Reading and Listening test is the most popular of the two TOEIC exams. It is conducted in test centers on paper and gives a score between 10 and 990. English reading skills and English listening skills are assessed equally in this test, with half of the final score coming in for each.
Speaking and Writing in TOEIC:
The TOEIC Speaking and Writing test is taken on a computer. This version of the TOEIC does not include an examinee, but rather the student records his or her spoken answers to the recorded or written prompts, and writes their written answers to the written portion. Again, written and spoken English are weighted equally in this test. The student’s final score ranges from 0 to 400.
The TOEIC test accurately assesses the English language proficiency of beginner to intermediate learners with reliable, valid and consistent test scores. It is recognized by hundreds of companies, as it:
- Helps motivate novice learners by identifying strengths and weaknesses.
- Corresponds to current English language teaching curricula.
- Helps prepare students for the TOEIC Listening and Reading Test.
TOEIC test cost:
The cost of the exam is $125-$200.
